Celebrations of International Museum Day
This year the International Council Of Museum (I.C.O.M.) is celebrating the 36th International Museum Day. The theme this year is Museums (Memory+Creativity)=Social Change. The Museum of Belize and the Houses of Culture invite everyone in the celebration!
At the Museum of Belize
The Museum of Belize hosted tours and documentary screenings for schools, throughout the week of May 13th to 17th, in celebration of International Museum Day 2013. Visitors can view the ongoing exhibition “Revisiting the 10th and 21st”- which is based on the Battle of St. George’s Caye and the events leading up to the Independence of Belize. Also on display at the Museum, is the fascinating collection of Maya artifacts on exhibit.
At the Corozal House of Culture
This year the Corozal House of Culture celebrated International Museum Day on Thursday May 16th, 2013 with an Open House. It were unveiling the Fort Barlee replica at 9:30 am. The CHOC values the historical point of the Fort and wants all citizens and visitors alike to grasp its importance with the installation of a 2’x2′ complete replica which will become part of the permanent exhibit. The CHOC also showed the films from the Belize Kolcha series throughout the day.
At the Banquitas House of Culture
The Banquitas House of Culture in celebration of International Museum Day were hosting a lecture on the Caste War & its Cultural influence in Northern Belize which will be facilitated by Ms. Keyla Magana from Corozal on Thursday, May 16, 2013. Two primary schools were participating Carmelita Government School and San Jose Nuevo Palmar. Approximately 120 students got impacted during a two hour session. The purpose of the session is to inculcate to the students and talk about the cultural influence this historic event had in our lives while illustrating with objects the language, food, traditions, garments and children’s fables. It concluded with the students exercising their artistic and creative talent by drawing or painting their favorite cultural influence and then forming a circle holding hands and explaining through symbolic act how entwined our culture is.
At the San Ignacio & Santa Elena House of Culture
In celebration of International Museum Day the San Ignacio & Santa Elena House of Culture was having an open day on Thursday 16th May 2013. Here is featuring two interesting exhibits, our permanent Cayo Historical Exhibit and the George Price Man of Purpose and Vision Exhibit. These exhibitions revisit our Belizean History and showcase the memories of our country’s road to independence.
